UK Mission to UN congratulate Tech Against Terrorism at UN Security Council Meeting

During the UN Security Council Meeting on 28 September 2017, the UK Mission to the United Nations congratulated UN CTED for their proactive approach to counterterrorism, and cited the Tech Against Terrorism Project as a successful example.

The meeting on “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts” was chaired by Ethiopia, and provided an opportunity for UN CTED Director David Scharia to provide an overview of Un CTED’s activities including UN CTED’s partnership with GIFCT.

In this address, Mr. Sharia stated that while UN members have made great strides in countering terrorist activities since the formation of Together, we have achieved a great deal since the adoption of resolution 1373 in 2001, he warned that “the terrorist threat continues to evolve at an alarming pace. And terrorist organisations continue to demonstrate flexibility and the capacity to quickly adapt their operational methods and strategies. They are also particularly adept at exploiting new technologies — whether to spread their messages; recruit new members; or finance, plan and perpetrate attacks.”

During the meeting, the UK Ambassador Jonathan Allen praised UN CTED “for their guidelines on foreign fighters and their Public-Private partnerships such as with as the partnership between ICT4Peace and tech firms to address violent extremist and terrorist content online”.
