Tech Against Terrorism & GIFCT Webinar: Defining terrorism and terrorist organisations on tech platforms

Are you a tech professional interested in learning more about how your company can strengthen its policies to ensure that your platform is not exploited by terrorists and violent extremists? At this webinar, we look at the issue of defining terrorism and terrorist organisations on tech platforms. Whilst defining terrorism might seem of academic importance only, for tech companies such definitions are vital as they help facilitate effective and accurate moderation of terrorist exploitation on their platforms. Further, clear definitions can help ensure that content moderation action on terrorist content does not restrict freedom of speech and human rights by removing lawful content. So what do tech companies need to consider when defining terrorism on their platforms? Should they, like Facebook and others have, look to draft their own definitions, or is it best to rely on recognised terrorist designation lists? And how do you operationalise and enforce your definitions in practice? To help answer these questions, we will be joined by experts from the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, the United Nations, and Brookings Institution. Discussion will be followed by a Q&A session that is open to all participants. Tech Against Terrorism and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) are pleased to present our series of free e-learning webinars on tackling terrorist use of the internet whilst respecting human rights. These free webinar sessions are particularly suited for tech professionals, content moderators, and others interested in learning more about terrorist use of technology and the internet more widely, and aims to help them protect their platforms and services from terrorist exploitation.
