30 April 2020

Tech Against Terrorism is pleased to announce that we have joined the GNET research consortium in a ‘specialist support’ capacity, alongside other partners such as King’s College London’s Policy Institute, George Washington University, the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), the Lowy Institute, and the Centre for Excellence in National Security Studies (CENS).

The Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNET) is an academic research initiative backed by the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), an independent but industry-funded initiative for better understanding, and counteracting, terrorist use of technology. GNET is convened and led by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR), a globally renowned academic research centre based within the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.

As a public-private partnership and key partner to the GIFCT, Tech Against Terrorism welcomes this collaboration and looks forward to contributing to GNET’s work through our experience of working with tech companies, civil society, governments, and inter-governmental organisations. We will continue our mission of working side by side with the global tech industry in tackling terrorist use of internet to support policy and practically oriented research at GNET, and to support counterterrorism researchers with data-driven analytical capabilities through initiatives such as the Terrorist Content Analytics Platform (TCAP).

Tech Against Terrorism and GNET are currently collaborating on a project that explores the role of data-driven solutions in detecting terrorist content and behaviours online. We will also provide GNET with support in creating baseline principles for GNET consortium members that encourage responsible research standards and reporting around terrorist content – similar to the Tech Against Terrorism Pledge for tech companies.
