Countering Terrorist Use of Emerging Technologies: Assessing Risks of Terrorist Use of End-to-End-Encryption and Related Mitigation Strategies

29 April 2021 5pm - 6pm GMT

This webinar is organised in partnership with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).
  • Are you interested in learning more about the importance of end-to-end-encryption (E2EE), as well as the threat of terrorist use of E2EE services and how the tech sector is working to mitigate this threat?
  • Are you a tech professional interested in learning about mitigation strategies that you can employ to counter terrorist use of E2EE, whilst preserving privacy and security for your users?
  • Are you a government or law enforcement official and would like to learn more about solutions to investigate terrorist use of E2EE without breaking encryption?
User demand for privacy has led tech companies to increase the offering for end-to-end encryption protection (E2EE), in particular for online communications. Growth in E2EE offering is sometimes accompanied by concerns over terrorist and criminal exploitation of such technology, and government calls for access to encrypted communications have sparked a debate over end-to-end-encryption and law enforcement access. For this Tech Against Terrorism & GIFCT webinar, we take a closer look at the threat of terrorist use of encrypted services, and how to best counter this whilst preserving online privacy and security for all users. As always, this webinar session will finish with a Q&A session that is open to all attendees. If you would like to sign up to this free webinar, please register with your institutionally affiliated email address – note that registration does not guarantee participation, and access to this webinar will be limited. This webinar will be held under Chatham house rules. About our webinar series Tech Against Terrorism and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) are pleased to present our series of e-learning webinars for 2021. These free webinar sessions are particularly suited for tech professionals, content moderators, counterterrorism researchers, and others interested in learning more about terrorist use of technology and the internet more widely – and how to counter it. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to engage directly with a wide range of experts, and explore practical ways to support smaller tech companies in tackling the terrorist use of the internet whilst respecting human rights. Over the course of the upcoming webinars, GIFCT and Tech Against Terrorism will convene some of the industry's leading counterterrorism experts and practitioners, policy researchers, and tech companies’ representatives.
